About Chengdu's Neighborhood

Chengdu is famous as the birthplace of Taoism, and influenced by that, it has developed a laid-back attitude toward life.

You've probably seen the videos on the internet: citizens lounging in bamboo chairs, sipping tea in the sun; trendy young people queuing outside trendy bars; matchmaker stands where aunties chatter about who is available and ready to mingle. It's not a show — it's just a normal scene in Chengdu. And now you have the chance to be a part of it.

You'll be matched with a local inhabitant — not a tour guide, but someone who actually lives in Chengdu. Perhaps a high school student, an English teacher, or a family inviting you into their afternoon walk. They're here to show you around to their world — whether a quiet spot under moonlight or sunlight.

But this isn’t just about watching life in China happen — you’re invited to join in. To share your stories, your curiosity, and your perspective. It’s a real, offline connection — one that goes beyond headlines and algorithms.

The Routes

We usually suggest starting the experience around 7:30 PM — that’s when most locals finish work and are ready to unwind. But this is not a fixed schedule. Before the meetup, you’ll exchange contact info with your local friend, and you’re welcome to discuss a different time or even a daytime hangout, depending on both of your schedules.

Where you go and what you do will vary depending on your host's idea. A student might show you around their campus and feed cats together; a local family may invite you to join them for dinner in their home; an person love tea and can't wait to show you the art of Chinese tea in her favourite tea shop.

This isn’t a tour with a fixed route — it’s a casual, spontaneous experience, shaped by local rhythm and personality.

During your time together, you might naturally want to buy a drink, a snack, or share a simple meal. These purchases aren’t included in the experience fee and are usually small. It’s generally understood that travelers cover these shared costs, and if you feel your local friend brought joy to your night, feel free to tip them as a thank-you.

A Great Day

Walking around Chengdu was unforgettable. I met Joanne, who guided me through leafy streets where neighbors played mahjong on the sidewalk, past tiny teahouses with the scent of jasmine in the air, and into lively markets overflowing with spicy snacks and chatter. The city felt slow, warm, and full of life. Joanne’s stories and humor made it feel like I was exploring with an old friend. I can’t wait to come back!
